From large institutions to small practices

  • European institutions and the public sector

Analysis and prototypes in large, multilingual environments with strict requirements: accessibility, 24 languages, a design system and a delivery team in another department.

    See: European Commission

  • Companies

The bridge between business and development in medical software, news media and e-commerce: requirements, UX, prototypes and follow-up through to delivery.

See: DPG Media · Bru Textiles · Nobel Biocare

  • Small organisations and the self-employed

One point of contact who understands both the business and the technology, and a platform that lasts for years: registrations, payments, invoices, several languages.

What I do

New in 2026

Agentic coding

AI agents now write a large part of the code. I use them where they make the difference, and I keep the decisions with people.

  • Iterate quickly on features

From idea to a prototype people can test, in days. Feedback is left on the real page, and the next version takes it in.

  • Setting up operations

Servers, deployment, backups and monitoring, with an agent as a strong assistant and sign-off before any change to a server.

  • Exposing security issues

Review rounds that find weak spots you would not think of yourself, each one checked and fixed with a test.

  • Helping a team get started

Working agreements, instructions for agents, a fixed gate before every change and tests as a safety net: the way I set it up for my own projects.

I have worked this way since May 2026: for the European Commission (prototypes in open source, without real data), in production for a client, and in projects of my own. Design and quality

So that what gets built is usable, for everyone and in every language.

  • UX and design systems

Interfaces and component libraries, preferably straight in code, so a prototype really works; if a team prefers to design in Figma, that works just as well. Design tokens let design and development speak the same language, on a system of its own or on top of an existing one such as the Europa Component Library. And not everything needs designing: a good existing library is often the best choice.

  • Multilingual sites and platforms

From four languages to all 24 official EU languages: components that cope with long and short labels, a translation process with a single source, and AI translation that a person always reviews.

  • Accessibility

WCAG 2.1 AA and EN 301 549, the standard behind the European Accessibility Act. Audit findings turned into a remediation plan per component and page, with tickets that can be verified, and automated checks that run with every change.

  • Customer journey and retention

Mapping the customer journey, from the first search to long after the purchase, and understanding why people stay or drop off. Then designing the messages and moments that arrive at the right time, from a welcome email to a reminder, and measuring with A/B tests what works.

  • Documentation and handover

Manuals and technical documentation in plain language, with procedures that have actually been carried out, so another team can carry on without me.

Building and running platforms

For organisations that need it built and kept running for years. Here I carry the whole of the IT, from design to server.

  • Platforms for small organisations

Registrations and payments, invoices and credit notes, Peppol, gift cards and online courses, with an admin that works on a phone. Built to last for years.

  • Moodle and learning platforms

Moodle from A to Z: understanding how the platform works and how to build on it, with custom themes and plugins, course catalogues and a learner experience that goes beyond the default. Installing, managing and updating it, today with agentic coding too. And a learning platform of my own, with lessons, pathways and interactive exercises.

  • Modernising without a big bang

Renewing an existing system step by step while it keeps running: a safety net first, then one step at a time that can go live on its own, with a way back. Migrations in which no data gets lost.

  • Deployment, backups and monitoring

An application on a server in the EU, with a deployment that checks itself and falls back on its own, backups whose restore has been tested, and monitoring that only speaks up when something is wrong.

For: Small organisationsSee: Samtati · Jorick Michiels Photography

  • Security review and hardening

Existing code reviewed for weak spots, every finding checked and fixed with a test. Not a penetration test, but the gaps that matter in practice: input, sessions, headers, secrets.

How I work

  1. 01 Analyse by building

A specification is a hypothesis until something proves it. That is why I build as part of the analysis: a prototype people can test before anyone is asked to build it for real. Once in Axure, Figma and code; today often with agentic coding.

  2. 02 Write decisions down

I record what we decide, why, and which alternative was dropped. Once in Confluence, today as short decision records next to the code. Anyone who comes later can see why something is the way it is.

  3. 03 Accessible and multilingual from the start

Accessibility and languages are requirements from day one, not a phase at the end. Automated checks run with every change, and a person always reviews translations.

  4. 04 Measure, don’t guess

Speed, accessibility and visual changes are measured and compared before anything goes live. A discussion is shorter with a number on the table.

  5. 05 AI as a tool, people in charge

Agents do much of the building. A person decides what gets built, in what order and what may go live. Agents propose, with tests and checks as a safety net, and wait for sign-off where it matters.

  6. 06 Privacy and EU hosting by default

What I build and host for clients runs in the EU by default, collects only what it needs and deletes it on time. This site sets no tracking cookies.

Tell me briefly what you are working on. Not everything I did for clients can be shown here, so feel free to ask.
